Abstract. This article discusses the problem of controlling ball mills at mining and processing plants, where the lack of an accurate method for measuring the load level leads to suboptimal operating conditions (underloading or overloading), which entails significant economic losses not only due to reduced productivity, but also due to reduced energy efficiency. Previous studies of experimental data have revealed an unstable correlation between the mass of the material in the mill and the pressure in the hydraulic bearings and vibration on the drive shaft. For this reason, it was decided that it was necessary to develop means of "direct" determination of the boundaries of the volume of material in the mill. The aim of the study was to identify the dependences of the characteristics of the vibration and acoustic signals excited in the mill drum on the degree and type of its loading. During laboratory experiments at the Bond mill, vibration signals (vibration velocity S, vibration displacement D) were recorded at various loading combinations (balls, sand, water) and the distance between the sensors and the drum impact site. Time, statistical and frequency analysis of the signals is carried out. It is established that the statistical characteristics of the signals (mean, median, max, std) demonstrate a dependence on the angle between the sensor and the impactor, which in most cases is approximated by a second-order power function. A significant effect of the loading type on the amplitude of the signals has been revealed: the addition of sand to the balls leads to a multiple decrease in the signals SX, SZ, DX, DZ, which is associated with energy losses due to friction in the material and between the material and the drum. Based on the results, recommendations are formulated for further research to develop a method for operational control of mill loading.
