Abstract. This article presents a comparative analysis of sapphire single crystals and traditional materials used in medical devices and implants. Quantitative data on mechanical, optical, and biological properties demonstrates sapphire's superiority across a number of key parameters: its hardness (2200 kgf/mm² on the Knoop scale) is 3.5 times higher than that of stainless steel, and the coefficient of friction in a sapphire-on-sapphire pair is two orders of magnitude lower than that of a metal-on-polyethylene pair. It is noted that, due to the possibility of growing synthetic sapphires using the Kyropoulos and Czochralski methods, their cost has decreased by approximately 40-60% over the past decade, making the material economically feasible for widespread use. The use of sapphire in specific medical devices, such as surgical blades, endoprostheses, laser systems, and diagnostic optics, is examined in detail, with comparisons provided on service life, accuracy, and biocompatibility. The findings confirm the high potential of sapphire for creating a new generation of medical devices with a 2-5 times longer service life.
