Abstract. Based on the analysis of thermal processes on the electrodes of vacuum-arc plasma sources, a mathematical model has been developed and analytical expressions have been obtained for calculating the surfaces of the electrodes that ensure stable operation of the vacuum-arc discharge at high arc currents without the formation of localized discharge zones in the form of anodic spots. In order to avoid the anode spot mode of the evaporator, it is necessary to correctly calculate the geometry of the anode. It has been shown that the surface roughness during processing by the cathode spots of a vacuum arc is determined by the rate of metal erosion, its specific heat of vaporization, the average pressure acting in the cathode spot region, and the rate of liquid metal extruded from the cathode spot in the form of microdroplets.
